18th Century ROYAL ENGLISH ATLAS SERIES Eighteenth Century County Maps of England and Wales by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin.
Please see below a small fragment of the county of Somerset as an example to demonstrate the extent to which you can track down old towns and village place names - some that may have changed or even disappeared over time.
When you see each map in your computer's photo viewer, you can enlarge the original map to examine particular areas in more detail - towns, villages and features.
If your computer does not have a satisfactory viewer, we supply one free with each CD - together with instructions - and it can be installed onto your computer. Additionally Google has a powerful FREE download called Picasa2 which will enable you to zoom in and out throughout the map and print it if required.

The scale of each county may vary from map to map - this is because the originals from which the Royal English Atlas cartographers worked had to be reduced to fit the 'Royal' sheet size upon which the atlas was finally printed.

The engravers also added illustrations - mainly of cathedrals - but the county plates themselves were also works of art as well as historical statements. These embraced features, pastimes and commercial or agricultural activities typical of the day.

It will be evident from the excerpts given that the reproduction does require enlargement to allow easy readability. Text is mainly in calligraphic style and has had to withstand the rigours of over two centuries - and remember that certain letters and spelling conventions have changed during this period!
Of course you are free to print part - or all - of your map for display or ease of reading!
